30 Years of Making a Difference

30 Years of Making a Difference

30 Years of Commitment to Excellence

Since opening our doors in 1992, The Independence Village has focused on its goal to provide quality long-term care for intellectually and or physically challenged adults.

The Independence Village began as a dream in 1982 when Gladys Stephenson placed an ad in the local newspaper, calling for a meeting of parents and caretakers of adults with disabilities to plan for a community-based means of continuing care when they could no longer do so. Sixteen people from across Galveston County responded, and later that year formally organized as a non-profit entity.

As the enthusiasm of these devoted and hard-working volunteers grew, plans to build a residence were developed. It took a decade for the group to realize their dream with volunteer efforts, contributed land and material, and support from local citizens, businesses, churches, craft sales, BBQ Fundraisers, memberships, and other charitable organizations. In 1992 they opened the doors to the private non-profit Assisted Living Facility that we know as The Independence Village.

The Independence Village provides an opportunity for the residents to live as independently as possible in a home-like setting and creates a personalized care plan specific to each resident’s needs to allow them purposeful independence so they can enjoy every day to its fullest potential. There are residents who have gone to higher education, have jobs, or have volunteered. Our residents are active members of the community.

While the 30-year journey of The Independence Village has been about growing and adapting, our underlying values have always remained consistent in the quality of care of our residents. They are encouraged to make proactive choices that challenge and improve their social and recreational skills. They participate in a variety of enrichment activities such as fitness, arts and crafts, games, karaoke, bible studies, dinner outings, dog therapy, live bands, bingo nights, and our very own Girl Scout Troop.

We’re proud and excited about all that we have accomplished and experienced over the past three decades. We’re even more excited about what lies ahead. So, here’s to celebrating our 30th anniversary and looking eagerly toward the future where we will continue to provide the highest level of care for our Residents!
